West Alabama Neurosurgery & Spine was established in 1995 by Dr. Givhan and Dr. McKenzie with the goal to provide quality, patient-focused neurosurgical services while remaining a medical practice of integrity and high ethical standards. Our physicians practice general adult neurosurgery, from brain tumors and aneurysms to all spine related problems and peripheral nerve surgery.
Meet the Doctors
Bryan S. Givhan, M.D.
Dr. Givhan is a Board Certified Neurosurgeon having practiced general adult neurosurgery in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, since 1995. Dr. Givhan attended Samford University in Birmingham and the University Of Alabama School Of Medicine. He served a general surgery internship and his Neurosurgical residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham from 1989 to 1995. Dr. Givhan specializes in a broad range of complex cranial surgical procedures as well as spinal procedures utilizing minimally invasive techniques.
In addition to his normal medical duties, Dr. Givhan also serves as the official Neurosurgeon for the University of Alabama football team. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and a member of both the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Southern Neurosurgical Association.
Rick L. McKenzie, M.D.
Dr. McKenzie is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He completed his fellowship spine surgery at the Semmes-Murphy Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee and his neurosurgical residency at the Cleveland Clinic. His surgical internship was completed at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. McKenzie earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan and his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota.
He is a US Army veteran and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
